Kurt Goessman, Shotokan Karate Instructor in Penticton
Kurt Goessman is the instructor for Skaha Shotokan Karate in Penticton, BC. He began practicing Shotokan karate in 1983 in Kamloops, where his main instructors were Rob Powers and Al Goessman of the Kamloops Shotokan Karate Club.
Kurt teaches traditional Shotokan karate with a focus on fundamentals, discipline, respect, and steady long-term development. His goal is to help students build strong technique, clear effort, and stronger character through regular practice.
His training has been strongly influenced by Norman Welch, Shihan of Canada Shotokan Karate, and by the Kamloops tradition connected to Canada Shotokan. Over the years, Kurt has participated in many tournaments and events, including the Nisei Week tournament in California and the World Police and Fire Games.
A family connection to Shotokan karate
Karate has also been an important family practice for Kurt. His father, Al Goessman, is a Godan and longtime Canada Shotokan instructor in Kamloops. Kurt also trains with his son Erik, a brown belt, and his daughter Kamryn, continuing the family connection through regular practice.
