Toshio Watanabe Sensei
Toshio Watanabe Sensei was an important senior figure connected to Waseda University karate, the Funakoshi lineage, Ohshima Sensei’s work, and the wider development of traditional Shotokan practice.
Watanabe Sensei was born Toshio Kamata and later took the Watanabe family name after marriage. Before the Second World War, he served for several years as captain of the Waseda University Karate Club.
His training connected him directly to the early development of Shotokan karate. He studied under both Master Gichin Funakoshi and Master Gigo Funakoshi, placing him close to the source of the modern Shotokan tradition.
For many years, Watanabe Sensei also served as president of Tomon Kai, the graduate group of the Waseda University Karate Club. Through this role and through his continued support, he helped preserve the connection between Waseda karate, Ohshima Sensei’s work, and the spread of Shotokan practice internationally.
Watanabe Sensei was a strong supporter of Ohshima Sensei’s efforts to share karate throughout the world. His connection to Canada Shotokan Karate was especially meaningful, and he honoured Canada Shotokan by participating in its 25th Anniversary in 1997.
For students of Shotokan karate, Watanabe Sensei represents an important link between Waseda University, the Funakoshi lineage, Ohshima Sensei, and the development of Canada Shotokan Karate.
