Karate is dangerous so proper observance of etiquette is as important to our training as is learning the physical techniques of karate. Please follow the etiquette below at all Canada Shotokan Karate (CSK) dojos:
ON THIS PAGE
Dojo etiquette gives training its structure. These guidelines help students practise safely, show respect, and understand what is expected before, during, and after class.
ENTERING AND LEAVING
Karate training begins before the first technique. Students should enter calmly, remove their shoes, bow when entering or leaving, and be ready to join practice with attention and respect.
Please make every effort to arrive on time. If you are late, enter quietly and wait at the back until the instructor asks you to join the class. Bow before joining the practice.
UNIFORM AND PERSONAL CARE
The dojo is a formal training place. Students should wear a clean white gi and keep it in good condition. Personal cleanliness is part of showing respect for yourself, your instructor, and other students.
Watches, jewelry, and other items should be removed before practice to avoid injury. Fingernails and toenails should be kept short so partner practice can be done safely.
BEFORE CLASS
DURING PRACTICE
During class, students should listen carefully, avoid unnecessary talking, and follow the direction of the instructor. Practice should remain focused, respectful, and safe for everyone in the room.
Food and beverages are not permitted during practice. Do not lean on walls, sprawl with legs stretched out, or leave without permission. If an injury happens, report it to the instructor before leaving.
SAFETY AND RESPONSIBILITY
Students may be asked to help clean before practice. Cleaning the training space is part of the attitude of karate practice, not separate from it.
“Polishing the floor is in fact the art of polishing your own mind.” — Ohshima Sensei
Treat all equipment with care. Shields, focus mitts, and other training items should be put away neatly and should never be thrown around.
VISITORS AND DUES
Visitors should sit quietly at the back and avoid interrupting practice. The class environment should stay calm and focused for the students who are training.
Students are also expected to stay current with dues. If there is a problem paying on time, speak with the person responsible for dues collection.
